And His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor…Prince of Peace. (Isa.9:6).
But Jesus said in Luke 12:51(NIV) “do you think I came to bring peace on Earth? No, I tell you, but division. From now on, there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. They will be divided, father against son, and son against father, mother against daughter, and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law. (Luke 12:52)
A spiritual division is what He meant. Do not quarrel with your in-laws or children or their spouses by quoting the above mentioned verse. Make your home a sweet home by loving them…..”God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God and God in them” (1John 4:16)
Abraham divided everything between himself and Lot and allowed Lot to go in his favorite (preferred) direction, while he headed towards the opposite direction. He prospered while Lot’s life had a sad ending.
Noah obeyed God. He and his family distanced themselves from the rest. And they survived the floods. God blessed them further.
Joseph and his brothers were divided. Joseph won ultimately. The brothers had to bow down to him as per the vision given to him by God.
The Psalmist says: “Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners, or sit in the seat of mockers. (Psalm 1:1, NIV). Such a man, – “He is like a tree planted by streams of water.” (Psalm 1:3)
The division between the godly and the ungodly is to avoid the righteous from being influenced by the unrighteous. This is desirable division. Truly, “the unity of the righteous is their strength.” The Trinity itself is a union of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Be united with them. Find delight in the law of the Lord. Rejoice in Him along with the congregation of the righteous.
Be united with the church. But draw a clear and firm line of division between you and the ungodly!
