Serpent on the Pole:
Aaron died on the top of Mount Hor (Num. 20:27-29), and the Israelites travelled from there along the route to Red Sea. They became impatient and murmured against God and Moses.
“Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the desert? There is no bread! There is no water! And we detest this miserable food (manna).” Num. 21:5 (NIV)
The Lord sent venomous snakes among them, they bit the people, and many Israelites died. (Num. 21:6). Thus they received punishment for murmuring against God and Moses.
They repented and asked Moses to pray that the Lord will take the snakes away from them.
Moses prayed. The Lord said: “make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live” (Num.21:8). “So Moses made a *bronze snake and put it on a pole. Then, when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, he lived.” (Num. 21:9).
There was no medicine (antidote) available for the snake bite. They looked up to the snake and lived.
Son on the Cross:
Today we have many medicines made by man, not only for snake bite but also for many other diseases. But there is a limit for man’s knowledge about the diseases and its cure. Even with a lot of research done for many long years, man is unable to find the cure for many diseases. Many varieties of cancers, allergies, arthritis, STDs, AIDS, ageing etc. have no cure. Some relief from pain can be given but not a lasting cure. One may have to live with it and the real relief may be death.
God has given a solution for these.
He lifted, not a bronze image, but His only begotten Son, nailed to the cross on Mount Calvary.
Look up to Him and pray to his Father, the heavenly one who created us. Call upon His name and you will be saved from your sin which is the root cause for many of these ailments. His mercy will relieve you from the pain and cure you miraculously. The Creator knows how to rectify.
When medicine fails, when doctors say they cannot help you, when your money cannot buy healing, or you do not want to trust any earthly remedies………
Call upon Him..! Cry unto Him..!
Remember “with His stripes we are healed” (Isa 53:5 KJV)
Yes, “…He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His wounds we are healed”
(Isa. 53:5 NIV)
His mercy endureth forever, so when everything else fails………

*Note: In their typical style, the Israelites kept the bronze snake, a symbol of God’s mercy, as an idol to worship. They called it Nehushtan, a word derived of Serpent + Bronze, in Hebrew. They burnt incense to it for centuries till the time of King Hezekiah. He destroyed the bronze serpent to clean up the house of the Lord and did what is right in the eyes of the Lord. (2Kings 18:3&4)
