According to the records mentioned in the Gospel according to St. Mark chapter five, a woman with an issue of blood decided to break new grounds. She decided to touch the garment of Jesus for a healing. She touched the hem of his garment and the healing virtue flowed into her. She recognized immediately that she was healed in her body. What followed was, Jesus asking a very seemingly insignificant yet a very pertinent question. He asked, “Who touched my garments?” The disciples responded saying,.. “People throng you and you ask who touched you?”. He declared that someone obscure had triggered the spiritual dynamics to release the healing virtue from him! Unlike many who thronged Him but had not benefited, someone just tapped into His spiritual fullness. He simply appreciated the faith of a woman. “… Daughter, your faith has healed you”. Jesus equated the ‘proactive action based on her understanding’ to ‘Faith’.
This unnamed woman lived at a time of Mosaic laws when a person with an illness such as hers, wasn’t allowed to touch or be touched by anyone, lest she defile others. She perceived that she wasn’t supposed to touch or be touched by anyone including Jesus, the Great Healer. She also knew that this was her ONLY chance at getting healed. She had tried every other medicine ever known to man. Till then there is no record of a person who had ever tried touching someone’s garment for healing. No one knew it could work, but this woman believed. This woman worked what she could within her limitations. When she touched His garments, she was healed!
This woman’s testimony of tapping into the healing virtue of Jesus by touching the hem of his garments was breaking new grounds. When the news spread across towns where Jesus traveled, of this woman’s leap of faith and more importantly, an added dimension of Jesus’ healing virtue. We read in Mathew 14:35, 36 And when the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought all their sick to him and begged him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.
This story teaches us that we receive answers to prayers in unprecedented ways, when we do what we can within the boundaries of our limitations, as an act of our faith, based on our understanding and in alignment with the Holy scriptures.
