Suddenly I was caught by the Roman soldiers,
While going home, leaving the country road,
To see my dear children Alexander and Rufus,
I could not imagine what the soldiers wanted.
Confusion, surprise and fear gripped my heart,
What they showed me made me very sad,
They said: Jesus is unable to carry, even lift,
And go up to Golgotha bearing the cross of wood.
They forced me to carry the heavy wooden cross,
For the one who suffered it, not for his fault,
Deserted by followers, while carrying others’ sins,
The Lord chose me, when all others had quit.
I never enjoyed his happy company or his miracles,
But carried the heavy cross by sheer accident,
Not a golden toy-cross on a shiny necklace,
Not of polished wood or a jewel on a bracelet.
Little I knew about what happens in future,
I, Simon, went home, back to Cyrene,
Never expected any reward for my gesture,
But in the Bible, my Rufus found mention.
Thank you, my savior, for choosing me,
Many were called while you preached,
Only a few were chosen for the ministry,
Strengthen me to bear the Cross, my Lord.

‘Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight …’
