KING DAVID – II . . . ?

Prophet Ezekiel narrates in Eze.Chapter.37, a wonderful vision that he saw:
“… The hand of the Lord was upon me, and he brought me out by the spirit of the Lord and set me out in the middle of the valley: it was full of bones. He led me back and forth among them, and I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, bones that were very dry. (verses. 1 & 2)

He asked me, ‘Son of man, can these bones live?’ I said ‘Sovereign Lord, you alone know.’ …” After this the Lord told him, what he will do for these bones. “Prophesy to these bones” and see what happens. “Then you will know that I am the Lord.”

The prophet continues: “… So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I was prophesying, there was a noise, a rattling sound, and the bones came together, bone to bone. I looked, and tendons and flesh appeared on them and skin covered them, but there was no breath in them.” (verses.7 & 8)

“Then he said to me prophesy to the breath, prophesy, son of man, and say to it, ‘ this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Come from the four winds, O breathe into these slain, that they may live.’ So I prophesied as he commanded me, and breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet – a vast army “. (verses. 9 & 10)

Then he said to me:”Son of man, theses bones are the whole house of Israel. They say, ‘our bones are dried up and our hope is gone; we are cut off.’ Therefore prophesy and say to them: This is what the Sovereign Lord says: O my people, I am going to open your graves and bring you up from them; I will bring you back to the land of Israel. Then you, my people, will know that I am the Lord when I open your graves and bring you up from them. I will put my Spirit in you and you will live, and I will settle you in your own land. Then you will know that I the Lord have spoken, and I have done it, declares the Lord.”(Verses 11 to 14)

Following this and other prophetic acts (verses 15 to 22), we read in verse 23 thus: “They will no longer defile themselves with their wild idols and vile images or with any of their offences, for I will save them from all their sinful backsliding and I will cleanse them. They will be my people and I will be their God.”

“My servant David will be the King over them. And they will all have one shepherd. They will follow my laws and be careful to keep my decrees.” (verse.24)

“They will live in the land I gave to my servant Jacob, the land where your fathers lived. They and their children and childrens’ children will live there forever, and David my servant will be their prince forever. (verse.25)

The fulfillment of this prophecy: More than 2600 years had passed from the time of Prophet Ezekiel. After the world wars, the state of Israel was formed. It was through the tireless efforts of many people and sympathetic countries that ‘ISRAEL’ came into existence once again on 14th May 1948.

Jesus said: In the parable of the fig tree: “As soon as its twigs get tender, and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near.” (Mt.24:32 NIV). The time of the return of Jesus is nearing because ‘Israel’ has come back again like the fig tree that gives out leaves in summer. (Ref. Mt.24:29 to 32)

There were many who struggled and worked earnestly for the formation of this country. Israelites (Jews) were scattered all over the world and went through a lot of persecution for many, many years. Words cannot describe their suffering:

Their ‘bones were dried up and their hope was gone’ says, Ezekiel in 37:11

Prophet Jeremiah laments like this: “Her (Israel) foes have become her masters; her enemies are at ease. The Lord has brought her grief because of her many sins. Her children have gone into exile, captive before the foe. All the splendor has departed from the Daughter of Zion. Her princes are like deer that find no pasture; in weakness they have fled before the pursuer.” (Lament. 1:5, 6.)

“Bitterly she (Israel) weeps at night, tears are upon her cheeks. Among all her lovers there is none to comfort her.” (Lamentations of Jeremiah. 1:2)

Ultimately, in God’s time, they found their country was revived in the year 1948. Happily, they returned to their country even though threatening conditions existed around it. Yes, their God brought them to their father Jacob’s land once again.

One of their prominent leaders became the first Prime Minister of ‘Independent Israel’ in 1948 and was in office up to 1954. His name was Mr. David Ben-Gurion. Shall we call it just a coincidence or fulfillment of prophecy in Ezekiel 37:24, for his first name is ‘DAVID’..?

Or was he…

The King David mentioned in Ezekiel Ch.37 verse 24..?

What a coincidence…!

Further, in the English version, verse 25 says: “And my servant David shall be their prince forever.”

But in the Tamil version of the Bible in verse 25 one will read thus: “Yen dhasan aagiya Dhaveedhu enbavar yentru yentrum ‘Adhipadhiyai (ruler)’ iruppaar.”, (this line inspired me for this write up.)

It means: “My servant, the one called David, will be their RULER forever.”

We know that the system of Monarchy in the days of Ezekiel has now changed to Democracy – a system not known to him. And there are no RULERS called KINGS and PRINCES in this system. Only Prime Ministers are Rulers and Presidents become constitutional Heads of the State.

A common man elected to the position of a PM can also be the ruler (the King). Therefore the PM should be the King mentioned in verse 24 and the Prince mentioned in verse 25. Yes, no one but their Prime Minister –this is the crux of this discussion. The year 1948 has seen King David –II, may be sometime soon, they will see another ‘Prince David’ too. Only He knows… Let His will be done…!

David Ben-Gurion: While he was the Prime minister, formed many state-institutions and was the head of many projects that were taken up by the Government for the development of their country. In the early days he was the head of a Jewish Agency, thus he was their leader even before the country was formed. He encouraged the Jews to return to their country and helped them settle there. Their country had to fight a few wars and he oversaw them and played a major role in them. Considering all his works and sacrifice for the country, they honor him by calling him, ‘Israel’s Founding Father.’

Just as the Preacher, we too wonder at all these events…. how prophesies are fulfilled..!

“He hath made everything beautiful in His time; also He hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end.” (As he says in: Ecc.3:11 KJV)

David Ben-Gurion is no more. He passed away on 1st Dec.1973 at the age of 87. But he lives forever in the hearts of the Israelites as their first Prime Minister.
